About the show

A travel podcast for people who'd rather stay longer

Tide and Light is a podcast about slow travel, art, and the slow beauty of living intentionally: going back to the same places, looking at them properly, and making something out of what you find. I'm Lily Mae. I host it.

A bowl I walked past for two years before I saw it. Episode three is about why.

Who I am

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, near the water, and studied fine art in college because it was the only thing I actually wanted to do. After that I spent a couple of years doing graphic design for small businesses, saving money and feeling vaguely restless.

The first time I went to Hawaii I was twenty-four. I'd been asked to draw some illustrations for a friend's travel site and went out to see what I was drawing. I stayed three weeks, went back six months later, and have kept going back ever since. San Diego is home now: close to the ocean and easy to leave from.

I paint in watercolor, mostly coastlines and small ordinary things, in cafes, on beaches and at kitchen tables. I shoot a cheap film camera alongside my phone, I find the market wherever I go, and I keep a journal every day that nobody reads.

What the show is

Each episode follows one idea about travel or making things: staying longer than you planned, seeing a place past its postcard, what a trip does to your work when you get home, what painting teaches you about where you are. It's slow on purpose.

What it isn't

  • A bucket list. I'd rather go somewhere fifteen times than go fifteen places once.
  • A hidden-gems show. If a place can't handle the traffic, I won't tell you exactly where it is.
  • Envy content. I want you to want to go somewhere, not feel bad about where you are.

Sponsors

Some episodes carry a short sponsor read. I only say yes to things I actually use, like the paper and brushes I paint with, and I tell you who it is up front.
